Introduced on June 18, 2019, the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot program offers a streamlined route to permanent residency for caregivers aiming to make Victoria, Nanaimo, or Mill Bay their new home. This program is tailored for:
- Childcare Professionals: Those with experience in roles such as babysitters, private home childcare providers, live-in caregivers for children, and nannies.
- Home Support Experts: Professionals experienced in roles like attendants for persons with disabilities, family caregivers, home support workers, live-in caregivers for seniors, personal aides for home support, and personal care attendants.
This revamped program, compared to its predecessor, the Live-in Caregiver program, brings significant improvements catering to both employers and caregivers in British Columbia.
In the past, caregivers were restricted to specific employers. If any issues arose in the employment relationship, they had to reapply for a different work permit. Now, the program grants occupation-specific permits, enabling caregivers to work for any employer in their field. Moreover, family members accompanying the caregiver can secure open work or study permits, ensuring families stay united.
Previously, employers had to undergo the lengthy Labour Market Impact Assessment process, which involved a $1,000 fee and extended processing times. The new initiative has removed this step but has enhanced the educational prerequisites to ensure caregivers are highly qualified.
To qualify, applicants should possess:
- A valid job offer in British Columbia.
- Relevant caregiver experience.
- A CLB 5 proficiency in English or French.
- At least one year of post-secondary education in Canada or an equivalent international qualification.
